  1. The Gardener

From the recording In The World

Yes, I wrote this about a bunch of bushes that were being uprooted and thrown out when someone tore down a house to build a new one. It is of course metaphorical too.

Lyrics

You’ve been rooted here
For thirty years or more
Standing all alone
Outside my door

You blossomed every spring
Withstood the winter’s air
Helped birds to find their wing
Somehow it isn’t fair

Chorus:
But the house is falling down
Flying timbers all around
I tried to have you moved nearby
But the gardener says you’ll have to die
The gardener says you’ll have to die

They’ll cut you to your knees
Uproot you like a tooth
Then when it’s all done
They’ll find me someone new

Chorus:
But the house is falling down
Flying timbers all around
I tried to have you moved nearby
But the gardener says you’ll have to die
The gardener says you’ll have to die

I’ll think of you each day
Though I didn’t know you’re name
You’re just like one of us
Nobody is the same

Chorus:
But the house is falling down
Flying timbers all around
I tried to have you moved nearby
But the gardener says you’ll have to die
The gardener says you’ll have to die
The gardener says you’ll have to die
